Zero Impact Graffiti Turns Heads as SEA LIFE™ Aquarium Promotes New Exhibit

CARLSBAD, Calif. (May 27, 2009) – It’s a bird, it’s a plane, no it’s a shark in Balboa Park? Hundreds of mysterious sharks appeared all over San Diego today as SEA LIFE™ Aquarium spread the word about its new Sharks Revealed exhibit using “sea tagging,” a zero-impact marketing strategy. Curious onlookers watched as a snorkel-and-fin-clad diver sprayed sea water over templates on walls and sidewalks from Mission Beach to The Gaslamp Quarter, all the way up the coast to Carlsbad, leaving behind temporary shark impressions.

“At SEA LIFE we are all about interactivity and sustainability; and sea tagging combines both,” said Rebecca Berggren, Marketing Specialist for SEA LIFE Aquarium. “What better way to show children that they can create awesome art without damaging the environment? We are using sea water to make a lasting impression.”

Sea tagging was first used by the new SEA LIFE Aquarium in London last month and was developed by CURB, a London-based media agency, as a fun and innovative way to communicate the Aquarium’s launch. This is the first time sea tagging has been used in the U.S.

The images last just minutes, but leave behind a strong impression. “At first people didn’t know what we were doing, but once they caught on, they loved it,” said Berggren of the San Diego tourists who gathered around to watch sea tagging in action.

The sea tagging team passed out flyers and temporary tattoos, invited kids to help spray the images and posed for photos with tourists – all while talking about Sharks Revealed, the new interactive exhibit opening at SEA LIFE on May 29.

Sharks Revealed is designed to introduce children to the life cycle and evolution of sharks. Fun, hands-on displays give an up-close and personal look at sharks and how they eat, breathe and sleep. The exhibit includes a graphic timeline showing the evolution of sharks from 350 million years ago to today; a live display of sharks showing their development from eggs to adults; an interactive "shark lab"; and a large-scale model of a “mermaid’s purse” for a fun photo opportunity.

The SEA LIFE Aquarium in Carlsbad already has more sharks than any of the other 29 SEA LIFE Centers world-wide including black tip reef sharks, white tip reef sharks, zebra sharks, leopard sharks, epaulettes, Port Jackson sharks and the rare grey reef sharks. Several new species will be part of the “Sharks Revealed” exhibit including the brown banded bamboo shark, the white spotted bamboo shark and the coral catshark.
